The Abacos
The chain of tiny Abacos islands stretches for 200 miles (322km) and form the most northerly part of the Bahamas nation. Situated only 200 miles (322km) from Miami they are a popular holiday destination, and therefore fairly well developed for tourism. The Sea of Abaco, the protected waters in the cays’ lee, is a hot spot for yachters, and the chain has earned the nickname ‘The Sailing Capital of the World.’ Abaco technically consists of Great Abaco, the lower part of the island, and Little Abaco, its northwestern extension. Most folks live in Marsh Harbour (the largest town in the Abacos) or on one of the four Loyalist Cays (the name comes from these cays’ early settlers, who arrived here after fleeing persecution during and after the American Revolution). While there are a large number of cays in the Abacos, we will only discuss a few of the cays most frequented by tourists. Ferries or private boats carry passengers to the Cays. Home Town and Elbow Cay have much to offer tourists including resorts, marina, vacation home rentals, restaurants, activities and shops. Golf carts are the only means of ground transportation. Man-O-War Cay has no resort facilities and offers a quieter setting, with private vacation homes available for rent. Man-O-War Cay is a popular cay to build a vacation home. Green Turtle Cay offers a variety of offerings including a resort, marina, restaurants and activities.
