Caribbean : Anguilla

Anguilla Leeward Islands Coral island. 91 km2 (35 sq miles) in area, some 250 km (155 miles) east of Puerto Rico. The interior of the island is flat, dry and scrubby, pockmarked with salt ponds and devoid of dramatic scenery. Anguilla is one of the most paradise like islands in the Caribbean. The northernmost of the Leeward Islands, 145 miles east of Puerto Rico , the island is 16 miles long and 3 miles wide. However, this fact is largely ignored by an increasing stream of visitors who beat their way here for the glorious turquoise waters and truly stunning beaches. Some of these, particularly Rendezvous Bay in the southwest and Shoal Bay in the northeast, are among the finest in the Caribbean.

The Valley is the capital of the island, and is located right in the center. Sandy Ground village on Road Bay, the main port and the center of nightlife, is located on the north coast. Cap Juluca, Cuisinart and Malliouhana are the largest luxury resorts on the island, and are located on the west end. Anguilla also has several smaller resorts and private guesthouses, as well as a great selection of bars and restaurant from the most casual to the star studded. Renting a car or scooter is recommended as there is no public transport service. Most travellers arrive via regularly scheduled flights from Puerto Rico, Antigua, or neighboring St. Maarten, which also offers a direct ferry service to Blowing Point on the south coast of the island about 2 miles from the capital, The Valley, or 5 miles from the major resorts in the west. Since the island is very small, the beaches are never far away.

Anguilla ’s powdery-white sands surrounded by brilliant turquoise seas have earned this island a reputation for having the best beaches in the world.

Anguilla : Meads Bay

Meads Bay Meads Bay is Anguilla’s most popular Beaches. Meads Bay is certainly not crowded - some of the hotels are a good five-minute walk from their nearest neighbor. The bay is backed by a salt pond for most of its length. There are annual boat races from the beach on the first Thursday in August.

Anguilla : Windward Point

Windward Point Pack a lunch and take a hike along the rocky coast line of Windward Point or the long road that runs from North Side all the way to Island Harbour. At the far eastern tip of Anguilla is a small hill with panoramic views in all directions. This is Windward Point. earby Windward Point Beach is wild and exciting, being open to the Atlantic. While a little rough for swimming, it is great for exploring. Wear hiking boots and explore the eastern tip of the island. Climb the rock at the end of Anguilla and get an excellent view

Anguilla : Shoal Bay West

Shoal Bay West A much quieter beach than its easterly namesake, but equally beautiful with a perfect crescent shaped bay, fine white sand with sometimes exposed rock, good swimming, and views to St Martin. There is a beach restaurant and two of Anguilla’s architecturally striking resorts.

Anguilla : Little Harbour

Little Harbour Little Bay is located near Crocus Bay and the Valley, but it feels very secluded and is a favorite spot for boat excursions and snorkeling. Little Harbour is the most protected bay in Anguilla, but very shallow. We sailed our Laser sailboat here when we didn't know what we were doing and needed to practice tipping it over and righting it. The bottom is more like a lake bottom than the bright white sand of most bays.

Anguilla : Shoal Bay East

Shoal Bay East Shoal Bay in the east is the most popular beach on Anguilla. This means that a good portion of the beach is lined with beach bars, small resorts and umbrellas. Fortunately they seem to blend into the background and actually come in handy when you are ready for lunch. Elodias,Maderimans and Uncle Ernies have good food at the right price and shade.
